5 tips and guide for beginners to ride a bike

The population of two-wheelers and two-wheeler riders is growing at a rapid rate in Nepal. Looking at the status of the roads and alleys of Nepal, two-wheelers are the most convenient form of personal transportation in moving from one location to the other. These two-wheelers are used in every urban city to a suburban town as it is an easier and faster mode of transportation. There is a vigorously growing number of two-wheeler riders who need to know the basics to be safe when driving the bike or scooter.

We have listed the 5 tips and guide for beginners to ride a bike.

  • Know your VEHICLE!!!
  • Safety Gears is a must!
  • Always abide by the traffic rules!
  • Regular Maintenance is necessary!
  • Insurance!

Know your VEHICLE!!!

If you do not not where the indicator lights are placed and how to turn it off, if you do not know how your vehicles would react to a sudden break or heavy acceleration, if you do not understand the mechanism between the clutch and the movement of the vehicle, if you do not understand how the automatic engine turn off function works it is useless to be driving the vehicle. Especially when new riders are unaware of the minute features in their two-wheeler it may cause unpredictable casualties due a small mistake that they may be unaware of. Thus, it is important to go on guided test rides before riding on the roads alone. Most importantly “ride what you can balance and handle easily.”

Safety Gears is a must!

Be it a helmet, riding gloves, chest guards for the winter, or to get a bit extra knee pads and leg pads, it is essential to invest in these safety riding gears. Two-wheelers expose the rider directly into their environments where situations are unpredictable and thus to always be safe, it is really important for a new rider to be aware of investing in good quality and well built safety gears for their own protection.

Always abide by the traffic rules!

Traffic signals, road signs, road ethics, each of these elements must be carefully fulfilled so that the rider is being ethical. Correct way to overtake a vehicle, safe distance between vehicles must always be in mind. Traffic rules are things that you cannot miss to obey or the consequences could actually result in casualties.

Regular Maintenance is necessary!

Vehicles are machines that are operated by the riders and they must also be taken care of. New riders are recommended to visit the service stations themselves and learn more about their two-wheeler in-person when it is being serviced. Similarly, regular checks before rides are crucial to identify any mishap before one is on the road.

Insurance!

According to the Vehicle Act of Nepal, it is compulsory to have third-party liability when purchased. But just a third-party insurance would not be enough to cover all the possible damage to the bike and the riders. Thus, a new rider should immediately appeal for a two-wheeler insurance at a trusted insurance firm to keep them and their vehicle insured of any mishap that happens to them.

To all the new riders, BE SAFE, BE CONFIDENT, FOLLOW THE RULES AND ENJOY THE
RIDE.

Headlight Etiquettes

Nepal’s road and road safety rules are scattered all over the place. From speeding to overtaking and traffic rules to safety rules for vehicles, road safety regulations are not accurately followed and stated by the department themselves. Headlight Etiquettes are still not properly discovered and explored in the roads of Nepal. There are no rigid rules about the timing for the usage of high beam and low beam lights. Light indicators for indicating the ride route is still not seriously taken unless it is in the vehicle trial exams. Specifically the Headlight Etiquette is something that needs to be considered with the increasing flow of vehicles on the roads of Nepal.

As India adopted the European rule to adjust into Automatic Headlight On (AOH) or also known as the day-time-running light technology, almost every vehicle, especially the two-wheelers coming in from India were equipped with this technology. The concept of Automatic Headlight On (AOH) was developed to govern road safety to the maximum level as it induced improved visibility during the daytime, and definitely heading towards the evening. Due to this the low-beam headlights are always running which may have differed the users attention towards what intensity of light is being used.

The incorrect usage of light will directly affect the opposite person driving another vehicle. A person riding the vehicle must be aware of the correct usage of Headlight according to the timeof the day and weather condition. This could be a surprising fact for many but the usage of high beam headlight during heavy rains, fog and heavy snow is heavily discouraged as the high beam lights are directly reflected by the water droplets and snow, making it a glaring effect for the person driving on the opposite lane. This may cause unprecedented damages to the driver. These are unsaid and unwritten rules that vehicle drivers must be aware of but in the context of Nepal, these minute but crucial rules are neglected causing damage to the riders and even the pedestrians on the roads.

Worried Helmet Visor Fogging Up

Fogging of the helmet visor, especially during the winter rides, is very common. To be protected from the cold winter winds, people tend to cover their face with masks, mufflers and even baclava to keep the face warm. This will create the issue of the helmet's visor to fog up due to the increased warmth and humidity inside the helmet. Thus, we have curated some home remedies as well as actual treatments that are to be used to make the helmets visor fog repellent.

1. Anti-Lock Visor Inserts
- These are additional devices that are inserted into the visors that act as a layer to protect the visor from fogging up. They are attached by pin locks that directly attach to the helmet’s visor.

2. Anti-Fog Spray
- These sprays are especially made for protecting the visor from fogging up. This is an easy solution in the form of a bottled liquid that can be sprayed onto the visor’s surface.

3. Anti-Fog Masks
- To protect one from the cold winter winds as well as from fogging the visor up, an anti-fog mask can be efficient. Serving the dual purpose, these anti-fog masks will be able to reduce risk in visibility caused by fogged visors and will also keep the rider warm.

4. Home remedy (Dishwashing soap)
- This is the most simple and inexpensive method to make the visor anti-fog. This is a hack to prevent the visor from fogging where an individual can wipe the visor with a little blob of dish soap initially and proceed to wipe it with a clean cloth until the screen is clear.

Half VS Full Helmets

Safety is the utmost priority while riding a two-wheeler that is not externally protected. Additional external gadgets and accessories are added onto the two-wheeler to make the ride safe. Helmets are the two-wheeler accessory made to protect the rider from any casualty and possible injury. Not all different types of helmets available in the market serve a common purpose of protection. We can majorly distribute the helmets available in the Nepali market into three kinds of helmets:

1. Full Face
- As their name states, it covers the entire face of the rider, from the head to their chin. Naturally they offer the best protection as it completely covers the head of a rider giving 360 degree protection from the front till the back. These helmets do have some disadvantages to it. Because it is a full face covering helmet, it can get quite hot and claustrophobic, the face may not be properly ventilated, the field of vision is more concentrated and narrow and sound is muffled. Regardless, keeping safety at the pinnacle, a full face helmet is what everyone recommends and must actually use.
We have short videos on youtube channel; NepaliWheels, about a few full face helmets from SHARK, NIKKO and AGV.

2. Three quarters helmets:
- This type of helmet is focused on covering the top, sides and back of the rider's head but it leaves the chin and face unprotected. The three quarter helmet would be beneficial for someone who enjoys heavy ventilation and clearer sound. But it compromises on protecting a crucial section of the face that could be directly affected by a mishap. These types of helmets could be opted for normal city rides but full face helmets are preferable when one has to travel far.

3. Half Face helmets (Egg Shell helmets)
- The egg shell helmets are half helmets that cover only the top of the rider's head. These helmets do not protect any part of the head and there is a possibility that this helmet could fly off in case of an accident. These helmets are majorly used by cruiser bike riders and scooter riders.
High speed highway rides with many possible risk factors associated could be supported by a full face helmet. Comfortable and moderate speed rides could be supported by three quarter helmets and half faced helmets are helmets that are worn for the sake of wearing it. It would be rather wise to opt for three quarter helmets available in the market.
People have different opinions on what helmet suits best for what type of ride and two-wheeler. It is best to opt for the type of helmet one feels safe and comfortable in. 100% protection, 100% comfort and 100% enjoyment is what two-wheeler rides are all about.

Tilicho Expedition | Part 2

The second episode of the interview with Nikhil and Nitesh about their “Tilicho Lake Expedition on Pulsar N250”. This episode is filled with information and first impressions on the Bajaj Pulsar N250. Nikhil described this bike as “Beyond Expectations”. He too was surprised at how well the bike performed in such a terrain and the potential it actually had. A bike built for a completely different purpose was perfectly supporting the weather conditions at an altitude of 4500m. They were surprised about the fact that it was able to perform as well as, or even better than the
designated dirt bikes for such trail conditions.
With few modifications such as replacing the normal tyres with dirt tyres, few tweaks on the bikes regular suspension and removing some unnecessary items to reduce the kerb weight of the Pulsar N250, this expedition was conducted. Both riders really loved the fact that such a versatile bike has entered into the market with an amazing product, good after sales service and easy availability of the service centers, which the dirt bikes in Nepal lacked. From its versatile nature, reliability, performance abilities to the durability the bike provided to our expeditioners, they definitely recommend the bike to anyone looking for a bike that does it all. Our experienced expeditioners believe and state that the Pulsar N250 has been able to successfully set a benchmark in the 250cc segment of bikes in Nepal, as they go beyond their tagged purpose as a street bike. As mentioned above, from quality and performance to affordability, the Pulsar N250 brings so much to the table.
An expedition this big definitely does not come cheap and easy. With an estimated budget of around a million dollars, the team; Nikhil and Nitesh had to work rigorously to meet the correct sponsor that would be supportive in their wild adventure. It was difficult for them as well to give up the secure 9 to 5 job route and conduct something as entrepreneurs that has never been done in the world. Convincing and making the corporate companies understand about their dreams and the additional USP they could provide the company with this affiliation was one of the most difficult stages in bringing the expedition to life. Nitesh well quoted a statement “Every brand wants a hero, but they don't want to make a hero.” Support, understanding, communication, negotiations are some key elements that must be incorporated when two entities are dealing for any instance. Inspired by the legendary Nims Purja, Nitesh and Nikhil are leading towards the path of success and recognition with their own efforts and the support of our home companies.
